Chartreuse - the liqueur of the Carthusian monks.
The secret recipe of the 'Elixir Végétal', the 'Elixir of Long Life', dates back to 1605 and was deciphered from an old manuscript by the Carthusian monks.
Soon the elixir was also sold in a more diluted form as 'Chartreuse Verte' to the nearby villages as medicine.
The exact recipe was a well-kept secret until Napoleon Bonaparte around 1810, but he considered this recipe to be already known and unimportant.
Even today, Chartreuse liqueurs are still produced by monks, and this is also indicated by the 'ATC' label on the bottle.
Tasting notes:
Colour: Clear jade green.Nose: Complex, herbs, angelica root, pine, lime, peppermint, tonka beans, aniseed, cocoa.
Taste: Strong, spices, fresh vegetables, lemon zest, mint, pine, aniseed, tobacco.
Finish: Long lasting, peppermint, aniseed, ginger.
One enjoys Charteuse pure, on ice or as a cocktail!
